Does the art institution gobble up innocent and pure artists and turn them into conformist formula artists clutching at paper and fame? I don't know.
Does the art institution only attract artists that wish to commericialise their art making so that they can get a little green in their pockets? I don't know.
Does something only become an artwork with the institution accepts it as so or deems it to be saleable? Maybe?
Does any of this matter? No.
All art institutions be they commercial, government funded or artist run have a place in the broader artistic community. They all serve a purpose and the status quo would be shifted drastically if one facet of these were to disappear. The art community is self perpetuating. Each of its facets forces the others to adjust through the prejudices each has for the others.
(That's a confusing sentence and if this was an essay that shit would be revised).
It's important for artists to have an awareness of their existence within the framework of the greater artistic community. I think its a big part of maintaining artistic integrity. Not only is it valuable to be able to locate yourself artistically it also helps you locate other works and artists, this is also true of life i think. Be aware of yourself and the framework you are existing in.
Over and out.
