A few notes on parts of Hal Foster's 'Arty Farty' that grabbed my attention.
Information as the ultimate readymade. A great insight. Sharing information to create a temporary consciousness. Political movements have been doing this for years. Public events in various forms that invite participation can succeed only through sharing.
Artists aim to turn passive viewers into a temporary community of active interlocutors. Back to sharing information and meals.
At times, "the death of the author" has meant not "the birth of the reader", as Barthes speculated, so much as the beffudlement of the viewer. How much sharing is too much sharing, perhaps. While relational aesthetics deals often deals in ephemeral works, the viewer becomes critical as documentary evidence in many cases. The question is to what depths has the viewer partaken in the work to assist the work in reaching its true potential, its true realisation
I knew someone was going to say Arty Farty. I'm just upset it wasn't me.
